A Dormer Bathroom with Natural Light and Vintage Charm

Updated: Jul 7

Double loft conversions are becoming increasingly popular as families seek more space without moving house. Our latest project involved creating a stunning bathroom in the back dormer of a recently converted loft. And what a transformation it turned out to be!

The highlight of this bathroom has to be the walk-in shower positioned perfectly beneath a large skylight. There's something magical about showering with natural light streaming down from above – our clients tell us it feels like having their own private spa. The skylight not only provides beautiful illumination during the day but offers glimpses of the sky that make the compact space feel surprisingly open and airy.

Our biggest challenge came with the vintage wooden cabinet that our clients wanted to use as a basin unit. This beautiful piece had incredible character, but fitting a basin into solid wood required serious precision. We carefully measured and cut the cabinet to accommodate a stunning block of marble that would serve as both the basin surround and a striking design feature.

The marble block was custom-cut to sit perfectly within the cabinet, creating a seamless blend of rustic wood and elegant stone. It's a combination that shouldn't work on paper but looks absolutely stunning in reality.

The wooden cabinet was showing its age, so we took extra care to restore it properly. After the structural work was complete, we applied several coats of high-quality varnish to protect the wood and bring out its natural grain. The result is a piece that looks like it belongs in a boutique hotel while maintaining all its vintage character.

Dormer bathrooms present unique challenges with their sloped ceilings and compact dimensions. We positioned the walk-in shower in the highest part of the space, making full use of the skylight above. Every fixture was carefully placed to maximise both functionality and the feeling of space.

The plumbing had to be routed creatively to work with the existing loft conversion infrastructure while ensuring everything connected seamlessly to the main system.

The finished bathroom perfectly captures that vintage aesthetic our clients wanted while providing all the modern conveniences they needed. The combination of natural light from the skylight, the warmth of the restored wooden cabinet, and the luxury of the marble creates a space that feels like a retreat from the busy world below.

Sometimes the most challenging projects deliver the most rewarding results – and this dormer bathroom conversion is definitely one of those success stories.
